I guess this movie was intended for punjabi viewers. It was difficult for me to follow the dialogues..Preity however has done a good job with her histrionics.

the movie tries to portray zinta's seeking refuge in her world of imagination. But i dont know what the cobra is doing in all this though. Deepa mehta i think was trying to mix a folklore with a social issue which is a bit garbled. She borrowed the idea from Girish Karnad's Naag Mandala.

The message is quite profound here guys and may not have been understood well because it is totally in punjabi. Chand feels trapped, lonely and completely shattered by her abusive husband. So she conjures the kind and loving husband that she actually wants from her imagination but tries to justify his presence with the "Magic root" and her mother's mythological "Shesh naag" story. This imaginary husband is her way of living each day of her miserable existence.
The movie is meant for slightly mature audiences!

I just loved the movie as it definitely reflected an illiterate part of punjabi society where hubby and his family no matter what feeds on his wife and still wanna dominate her..this is known as domestic violence in Australia.. I have gone thru this piece of shit and ended up the violent and abusive relationship.. I think every gal married/to b married must c this movie and learn to say "NO" to brutal actions of their partners if they are in a violent relationship.Thanks to all parents who let and encourage their daughters to get gd education so they know what's best for their lives,if God forbidden they accidently happen to get into some unwanted relationship.
As was truly said by Chand's mum that every life is precious..so what men needs to understand is that they must respect the life of their better half who gives birth to other lives and get their generation going! tell me if I am wrong??

i am punjabi. i watched the movie. it was good until the snake thing happen. That's where it lost me. Can someone explain that? I ask my parents and they were also confused. The movie was good upto the snake part...

by domestic violence's point of view,Deepa mehta did a fine job......however in the movie Deepa is quite anable to interprate to the viewers, what "Chand's" imagination of "sheshnaag" is trying to show... rest the movie is awasome..prity has done a great job..i shoud say...."nice effort..nice movie.

oh yeah i forgot to say that deepa mehta's movies are intended for sensfull people. you need to understand the moral of the movie which clearly says "god is with truth and only truth". chand imagined of a naag and has been preeching it in her prays to wahe guru since birth as shown in beginning of the movie and that was the power of her prays that naag himself came to rescue her out of her miserable life in Canada. its a myth meeting with reality. wow!!! only deepa mehta can think of such a concept...kudos to you Deepa.

Although Videsh - Heaven on Earth is a movie on domestic violence, hatred, love and passion, Deepa Mehta doesn’t miss out on the humor. A few comic touches here and there brings out some smiles during the movie. And then there’s this imaginative magic touch to the movie. A very innovative one I must say. The film isn’t a usual Bollywood/Hollywood masala flick. Don’t expect a fast paced Bollywood-like drama content here. It’s brief yet very effective.
Videsh - Heaven on Earth is an absolute must-see movie for all those who seek some quality cinema. Some really brilliant performances, some really comic characters, some really interesting ones and some magic. If you think all Deepa Mehta could cook was controversy, here’s a flick that’ll change your mind.

No, this is not the real situation in abroad. I live in abroad for 2 and half years and I married to a man who is citizen of other country/s and I never met him before our marriage. But I really feel that I'm the happiest woman in this world. He madly in love with me and he always fulfills all my needs. Yes, I agree,in abroad, so many innocent Indian women have to pass through the similar situation when they married to a strenger and some of them have brutally tortured by her husband or in-laws. But it happens in India also. Don't you think? So think twice before you comment on something. Women are suffering in every country. In some cases,they are the victims of honour killing and killed by their own family members. So you can't say that she(Preety Zinta) is suffering just because she married to a strenger and came to abroad.
